Identifying Needs and Wants


Need and want are two terms that are commonly used to describe how people live their lives. Needs are things that are essential to life, while wants are things that are optional. Needs can lead to health problems or even death, while wants are things that a person may want to have but may not necessarily be necessary for them to survive.

Needs are defined as “physiological or psychological requirements for the well-being of an organism” (Merriam-Webster, n.d). This can include food, water, shelter, and even human contact. Needs can also include feelings of self-esteem and a sense of security.

Psychologists have often studied needs. One of the most popular academic models is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which outlines the various levels of need that humans have. This model suggests that lower order needs, such as food, shelter and water, are more important to people than higher order needs, such as belonging and esteem.

According to this model, people spend most of their time and resources trying to meet their basic needs before they seek more personal goals. In the process, they often neglect more meaningful aspects of their lives, such as relationships and career goals.

Some psychologists, such as Abraham Maslow, believe that humans have a hierarchy of needs, with higher-order needs being more important than lower-order needs. Those who are able to fulfill the higher-order needs tend to have better lives than those who cannot.

Researchers have found that people are most likely to meet their higher-order needs after they have met their lower-order needs. This is because people are more motivated to achieve their higher-order needs after they have met the lowest-order needs, such as food and shelter.

Needs can be divided into three categories: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary needs are those that are most essential to a person’s life. For example, a new apartment may be a primary need for some people. But a brand new car might be a tertiary need for another person.

Once a person has identified their main needs, they can begin to plan how they will meet them. This can include things like taking a cooking class, writing a book, or spending more time in their community.

The next step is to identify any other needs that may not be listed above. This can be done by asking friends and family members or through a needs assessment.
